The best description of a soul mate is from Richard Bach when he described a soul mate as “someone who has locks that fit our keys and keys to fit our locks”.  A lock is only opened when the right key is used.  Using the word “fit” explains that special relationship shared by two people.  Different as we individually are,  there is someone out there that almost think, feel and act like us.  It may be a friend, a family member or a lover/partner.   In the presence of this special person, we feel safe to be who we really are. No pretensions and inhibitions but only sincerity and honesty of our true selves. A soul mate is someone who brings out the best in each of us.  Even when everything around us goes wrong, we feel secure in the presence of our soul mate.

The word soul mate is often use too ordinarily that the true meaning is not appreciated anymore.  This word came upon through a story about how humans before consisted of four arms, four legs and a single head with two faces.  But Zeus was not happy with the power these humans bring that he divided them into two condemning them all their lives in searching for their other half just to complete them. Having found our soul mate is like finding our other half.  The person that complete us.  With just a look, a smile and even a nod, thoughts can pass through each other without the need for words.  In many cases, even when words are not uttered, a soul mate knows what you are about to say or what you feel.

I have found my soul mate.  Unlike others who found theirs in such dramatic and romantic way, my soul mate came when I was at the lowest point of my life.  I was broken and in pain while he was promised to marry another girl in his life.  We started out as friends but through friendship we discovered that despite our many differences-he a Filipino while I came from an almost traditional Chinese family, we are two persons fitting one another.  He is the other half of me and one cannot exist without the other.  Living a life with our soul mate doesn’t guarantee that the relationship is smooth sailing at all times simply because there is still a portion of differences in personalities.  Through time and the love shared, these rough edges are easily ironed out.  With your soul mate, you share your dreams and deepest longings, supporting each other through good and bad times.

I believe that there is someone out there for everyone-a soul mate.  As we journey into life, it is a joy to find that very key that will fit our locks.
